Soft Lenses

Soft lenses form the largest category of contact lenses sold. Soft lenses are made from a water loving plastic which is similar to a plastic sponge. It forms a artificial tissue which is Bio-compatible with Human tissue so is usually immediately comfortable to wear.

The most recent materials are silicon hydrogels which mean they provide more oxygen delivery to them, which benefits short and long term wearing and can allow some flexibility in overnight wear

The majority of soft lenses are now frequent replacement as one of the primary causes of complications are soilage and deposits. Frequent replacement may be daily (one use), fortnightly (14 day use), monthly (30 day use).

Multifocal contact lenses

Wearers of multifocals in their glasses can also benefit from having their contact lenses made in multi focal form great for general lifestyle wearing as an alternative to glasses.

Therapeutic Contact lenses

Some times we use contact lenses to protect the surface of the eye while it is healing. This may be the case with a dry eye or to promote corneal healing when there is an abrasion. In this case the contact lenses acts as a shield, as well as providing a lubricated surface to the front of the eye.

Specialty Rigid Gas Permeable Contact lenses

There are many cases where conventional soft lenses do not work because the surface of the eye has an irregular shape because of astigmatism, corneal graft or keratoconus. In other cases the eye has become hypersensitive to soft lenses because of long term reactions to deposits like denatured protein.

Modern gas permeable designs are comfortable and the materials promote high levels of oxygen transmission.

Managed well with cleaning procedures, rigid gas permeable lenses can last some years.
